Mom's the world around love getting flowers for Mother's Day. This year, instead of cut flowers, I decided to give Mom live plants that she can enjoy inside on her special day, then plant outside to enjoy for months to come. But since the plastic cell packs the plants come in aren't very pretty to look at, why not creative a beautiful basket container to dress them up in. Here I took an old thrift store plain wicker basket and a recycled crib sheet, and with the help of some paint and a few ribbons and trims, turned it from dab to fab.
1. Cut off elastic edge from the crib sheet and set aside. Cut open corner pleats and smooth out your fabric into one large piece. Decide how wide you want your ruffled trim to be, then cut notches in the fabric on one side that far apart. My fabric ruffle is 1.5" wide, but you can adjust that width to suit you. Tear along the notches so you end up with two fabric strips.
2. Apply Fabric Bond adhesive to the wrong side of one fabric strip and adhere to the wrong side of your second strip. Iron to fuse.
3. Apply a thin line of glue using the Glue Arts Glue Gun along the top edge of your basket, pinching and pleating your fabric ribbon as you go, creating a ruffled band.
4. Hot glue the elastic edge that you saved from step 1 to the center of your fabric ruffle.
Now we're ready to start our flower
5. Punch or cut a circle from chipboard for the center of the flower. Using Hot Glue, adhere the remaining elastic edging to the circle, starting in the center and spiraling outward until the entire circle is covered.
6. Cut 9 random circles from the fabric, 3 small, 3 medium, and 3 large. Stack the layers together and top with the spiral center. Adhere to the ruffled trim using Ribbon Adhesive.
7. Embellish with fabric ribbon, twill tape, hemp cord, a button, and felt leaves.
